Two Ways to Style Text in WhatsApp
Most people don't realize WhatsApp has two completely separate ways to style text — and they work very differently. Understanding both will let you choose the right one for each situation.
Method 1: WhatsApp's Built-In Formatting
WhatsApp has native markdown-style formatting that works without copying from anywhere. You type specific characters around your text before sending:
- Bold: Put asterisks around your text → *hello* sends as hello
- Italic: Put underscores → _hello_ sends as hello
- Strikethrough: Put tildes → ~hello~ sends as
hello - Monospace: Put backticks → backtick+hello+backtick sends as code-style text
These are WhatsApp's own formatting codes and they work on all versions of WhatsApp. The receiver sees the formatted text regardless of their phone or WhatsApp version. If you only need bold or italic for a message you're typing right now, this is the quickest method.
Method 2: Unicode Fancy Fonts
The second method uses the same Unicode characters that work on Instagram and TikTok. You generate styled text on a tool like Fontb, copy it, and paste it directly into WhatsApp. The styled characters appear as-is in the message — no formatting codes needed.
This method gives you many more style options than WhatsApp's four built-in formats. You can use script, Gothic, typewriter, small caps, and dozens of other styles that WhatsApp's own formatting doesn't support.
When to Use Each Method
Use WhatsApp's built-in formatting when:
- You want basic bold or italic in a message you're typing right now
- You're sending important information and want guaranteed rendering
- You're in a group and want everyone to see formatting correctly
- You want strikethrough (which Unicode fonts can't do natively)
Use Unicode fonts when:
- You want a style that WhatsApp doesn't offer natively (script, Gothic, etc.)
- You're setting a WhatsApp Status or "About" bio text
- You want the styled text to also look the same if someone screenshots and shares it elsewhere
- You want a consistent aesthetic across multiple platforms
How to Use Fancy Text in Your WhatsApp Status and Bio
WhatsApp's "About" section (found in Settings → Profile) is where many people like to use styled text. The built-in formatting codes do not work in the About field — but Unicode characters do.
- Go to fontb.com on your phone
- Type your About text or status text
- Choose a style and copy it
- Open WhatsApp → Settings → your profile → tap About
- Long press and paste your styled text
- Save
Does Fancy Text Work in WhatsApp Groups?
Yes. Unicode characters paste and display in individual chats, group chats, and WhatsApp Status. Every WhatsApp user will see the styled text correctly because WhatsApp fully supports Unicode.
