Strikethrough Text Copy and Paste: How to Cross Out Text in Any App

Need to add a strikethrough line through your text for Instagram, Discord, or Twitter? Here is exactly how to do it — including the Unicode method that works everywhere and the native methods on platforms that support them.

Strikethrough Text Copy and Paste: How to Cross Out Text in Any App

How Strikethrough Text Works

A strikethrough is a horizontal line through the middle of text, like ~~this~~, used to show something crossed out, corrected, or humorously contradicted. It's a popular effect in social media captions, Discord messages, and creative bios.

There are two ways to get strikethrough text: native platform formatting (where the platform draws the line for you), and Unicode combining characters (which work everywhere else).

Method 1: Platform-Native Strikethrough

Some platforms have their own strikethrough formatting built in:

Discord

Discord uses markdown formatting. Wrap your text with double tildes: ~~your text~~ and it will render as struck-through text. This is the cleanest method for Discord since it renders perfectly for everyone in the channel.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp also supports strikethrough via the tilde shortcut. Type ~your text~ (single tilde on each side) and it sends as strikethrough text.

Telegram

Telegram's markdown formatter supports strikethrough in the same way as Discord: ~~text~~. On mobile, you can also highlight text and use the formatting menu.

Slack

In Slack, strikethrough is also available through ~text~ or via the text formatting menu.

Method 2: Unicode Combining Strikethrough (Works Everywhere)

The Unicode combining strikethrough character (U+0336) is a special "diacritic" that draws a line through the character before it. When applied to every letter in a word, the result looks like: s̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶t̶h̶r̶o̶u̶g̶h̶

This method works anywhere that supports Unicode — including Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/X, Facebook, and any platform that doesn't have a native strikethrough option.

Popular Uses of Strikethrough Text

Captions showing a change of plan or joke

A very popular Instagram caption format: "Things I'm definitely not doing this weekend: s̶l̶e̶e̶p̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶i̶n̶" — the strikethrough creates a visual joke or irony that plays well on social media.

Instagram bios with sarcasm

Some creators use strikethrough in their bio to cross out something and replace it with the truth: "P̶r̶o̶f̶e̶s̶s̶i̶o̶n̶a̶l̶ chaos coordinator." The crossed-out word creates personality and humor.

Price listings and "was/now" content

Showing a crossed-out original price next to a sale price is a common e-commerce and creator monetization pattern. Unicode strikethrough makes this possible even in plain text fields.

Readability Warning

The Unicode combining strikethrough can be harder to read than the native platform versions, especially on small mobile screens. The line may look slightly uneven compared to platform-rendered strikethrough. For Discord and WhatsApp where native strikethrough is available, use the native method — it will look cleaner. Use the Unicode method for platforms like Instagram and TikTok where no native option exists.

Does Strikethrough Work in Instagram Captions?

Instagram does not have a native strikethrough option, but Unicode combining strikethrough text (generated via Fontb) does paste and display in Instagram captions, bios, and comments. The rendering is slightly different from platform to platform but is generally recognizable as strikethrough text.
